Drom-Inch 3-21 Burgess 3-21

Drom-Inch maintained their unbeaten league record with a hard fought draw in what was a very entertaining game played in summer like conditions in the Ragg on Sunday afternoon. Drom started the brighter with Seamus Callanan registering 2 points from frees before Burgess replied with scores from Damien O Brien and Stephen Murray. Callanan and Damien O Brien exchanged scores before the home side hit a purple patch scoring 1-4 without reply. Drom forwards were linking up well with points coming from Johnny Ryan, Callanan and David Butler. The latter’s point coming following a mistake from the Burgess goalie who pucked the ball off a defender’s back leaving Butler on hand to fire over the bar. The resulting puck out was won by Eamonn Buckley who passed to Callanan who in turn passed to David Butler who finished to the net to leave the score 1-6 to 0-3. Micheal Butler stretched this lead further with a good individual effort before Burgess replied with scores coming from Damien O Brien and Stephen Murray. Johnny Ryan and Murray exchanged points, the visitor’s score coming from a free. A further Johnny Ryan point from play extended the lead to 5 points before Seamus Callanan smashed a 21 yard free to the net which was half blocked by the goalie right on the stroke of half time. This left Drom-Inch going in at the break with an 8 point lead and one would think that they would win the game comfortably with another half hour remaining.

Half Time score Drom-Inch 2-10 Burgess 0-08

Burgess were first out of the traps in the second half with 2 points from the corner forward Stephen Murray. The home side responded with further points from Daivd Collins and Seamus Callanan (3). This seemed to drive Drom-Inch on and put them firmly back into the driving seat. However the turning point in the game was when pressure by the Drom backs on Damien O Brien resulted in a penalty. Murray duly converted the penalty and followed up with a pointed free. Could this be the start of the comeback for the North side? Callanan replied with a free after David Collins had been fouled. Seamus Butler who was having a quiet game by his standards scored a good point under pressure by several Burgess defenders. Within a couple minutes he had the ball in the back of the net running onto a break and finishing well from a tight angle leaving the keeper with no chance. This put Drom –Inch up by 9 points with 15 minutes remaining and looking like they would finish as winners leading 3-17 to 1-14. Murray brought a brilliant save out of Damien Young and Murray coverted the resulting 65. Another point from Murray and a long range Shane Maher free ensured that Burgess were keeping in touch and eating away at the lead. Points from Callanan and sub Paddy Kennedy stretched the lead again before a good run by Tony Scroope set up Stephen Murray to crash the ball to the Drom net. This left just 3 points between the sides with 5 minutes remaining surely time was running out for men from the North?  Another point from the dangerous Damien O Brien followed by a good score from Callanan left the game finely poised with very little time remaining. Burgess won a free in the middle of the field which Shane Maher lobbed in and was smashed to the net by Damien O Brien with an overhead pull. All eyes were now on the referee with time up and playing injury time. The resulting puck out went straight to Seamus Callanan who was pulled down on the sideline leaving a tough free to put Drom-Inch in front again and he blazed it over the bar. Burgess were given one final opportunity to level it and Damien O Brien won the puck out and off loaded to their star performer of the hour Stephen Murray to blaze over the bar and tie the game.

Drom-Inch will feel that they should of held onto the lead but they will be happy with the performance of several of their players including the return of county star Seamus Callanan. They were best served by Callanan, Matthew Ryan and Johnny Ryan. Burgess will be delighted with the result after been in arrears by 9 points at one stage in the second half. They had good performances from Damien O Brien and Stephen Murray who ended the day with 2-11.
