The final of this year’s Cahill cup took place in Kickham Park on Friday night amidst changeable weather but this didn’t stop the quality of hurling from serving up a fantastic game of hurling. Both teams short several regulars took to the field and went at it from the throw with heavy but fair body shots been dished out by both sides. Drom-Inch playing against a strong breeze were first to register a score through David Butler. The ‘Church got going through 2 points from the stick of Pat Shortt the second coming from a sideline cut from 35 yards out. Seamus Butler scored a free to level up matters before David Butler ran onto a Matthew Ryan long ball and finished to the net. The Butler brothers combined again straight after the goal Seamus setting up David for another well taken point. Pat Shortt reduced matters again with a pointed free. Seamus Butler was conducting the Drom-Inch attack and set up Michael Everard to score another point which was to start a 10 minute purple patch for Drom when they would stretch their lead to 1-7 to 0-3 before Upperchurch replied with a goal finished to the net by the nippy Eoin Shortt following a long delivery from Joe McGuire. This raised the Church’s dander and they finished the half stronger outscoring their opponents 3 points (Mikey Ryan (D),Paul Ryan, James Barry) to a solitary effort from Seamus Butler. Drom-Inch replaced David Collins with Declan Ryan just before the break. This left Drom-Inch ahead 1-8 to 1-6 with the task of playing with the breeze in the second half.
With weather conditions improving dramatically for the start of the second half, the men from the Ragg started the brighter in the second half with points from Declan Ryan followed by a goal from Michael Everard which was well saved by the church goalie at first attempt but Everard crashed the rebound to the net. Strong Church pressure resulted in 3 great saves from Drom-Inch keeper Damien Young as a goal was on the cards on each occasion. Upperchurch tried to reply through pointed frees from Shortt and Barry but Drom kept responding and tagged on points through Declan Ryan and Seamus Butler( following a fantastic cross field pass from the impressive Johnny Ryan). Drom-Inch introduced 2 more subs Kevin Butler and Donncha Kennedy replacing Paddy Kennedy and James Ryan. Two points from Johnny Ryan (the second one a monster free from 100 yards) sandwiched a Pat Shortt free. The impressive Seamus Butler scored two more points to increase the lead to nine points with time running out for the Upperchurch side. Heavy pressure from the Church resulted in a 21 yard free which Pat Shortt dispatched to the net despite the best efforts of the Drom keeper. Two more substitutions for Drom saw them introduce Joe Lupton and Enda Walsh in place of Michael Everard and Martin Butler. The final score of the match was to go to Johnny Ryan following a good pass from Declan Ryan. This sealed the victory for the Drom-Inch side which was only their second time winning the prestigious cup. Michael Costello received the cup from Mid board chairman Mattie Ryan. Best for the winners was Eamonn Buckley and Martin Butler in the defence, while the Ryan brothers in midfield got through a trojan amount of work. Up front Seamus Butler lead the proceedings and was at the centre of everything good while Michael Everard, David Butler and sub Declan Ryan scored 2-6 between them and did not let the Church defenders get any loose clearances.
