James Woodlock gives his views on the All-Ireland U21 Final

Tipperary bank on minor inspiration for U21 sensation

By Michael Moynihan
KILKENNY aren’t the only side to receive a confidence-booster heading into Sunday’s All-Ireland U21 hurling final.

Their opponents, Tipperary, took heart from the Premier’s All-Ireland minor victory over Galway last weekend, says midfielder James Woodlock.

“The minors definitely gave us a big lift. We went to see their homecoming and we were saying to ourselves, ‘that’s where we want to be’. They took some heart from us after we won the Munster championship and now we’ll be taking heart from them.”
Woodlock concedes that Kilkenny will be favourites, given the exploits of several members of the panel last weekend.

“Obviously they’re a great team and rightly favourites, they have eight on the senior panel that won the All-Ireland and they beat a great Galway team in the All-Ireland semi-final.

“A lot of our team are eligible to play U21 again next year, while Kilkenny have the likes of ‘Cha’ Fitzpatrick and John Tennyson who played in central positions last Sunday, and Richie Power, they’re all strong. We’ll be relying on our lads to do our own jobs first of all — if we can beat our own men one to one then that’ll be a start, but with their experience Kilkenny won’t have a problem with nerves after playing on some big occasions.

“We’ll be underdogs and maybe some people in Tipperary wouldn’t be too optimistic about our chances, but we’ll give it a good shot. Things are going well in training and confidence in the camp is high.”

Tipp-Kilkenny clashes always have the edge of a local derby and Sunday is no different. Woodlock points out that there are a few Tipperary panellists from the Carrick-on-Suir/Kilkenny border — “obviously they’re feeling the heat down there,” — while as a newly qualified garda the midfielder has extra motivation: “I’m going to be based in Kilkenny myself, so that’s an extra incentive.”

Tipperary have some senior experience to call on themselves. Woodlock was on the blue and gold panel for the Munster hurling final, Darragh Egan came on in that match, and Jim Bob McCarthy also has senior experience, while the feeling in the Premier County is that several members of this year’s U21 panel will be promoted to the senior ranks sooner rather than later.

“Training has gone well for us since the Munster final,” says Woodlock. “We played that game on a Wednesday night, we returned to training on that Saturday with a tough session and from then on it’s gotten stronger.

“The second half of the Munster final was all about fellas working hard, keeping that work rate up, but afterwards we felt that if we were to win the All-Ireland we’d have to up that by ten% again. You can see that in training even, lads encouraging each other to keep going.

“We were favourites against Antrim in the semi-final but we laid down a marker early on in that game. We felt Antrim were going to come out strong and they had nothing to lose, so we felt if we got a run on them we couldn’t take the foot of the pedal — and that’s how it worked out. We brought on subs who kept it going, we went to the final whistle and didn’t relax for a second. We took it as if we were playing Cork again and it was up to us to keep it going. We’ll have to do that again this Sunday.”

Callinan's late point denies Cats as terrific Tipperary book

All-Ireland MHC semi-final
TIPP minors booked their place in the All-Ireland final after staging a late comeback against their arch rivals in Croke Park yesterday.
Tipperary fully deserved this victory, although they made heavy weather of an intriguing clash and should have been out of sight by half time.
Talented corner-forward Patrick Bourke did much of the damage in a first half which Tipperary dominated but, even so, they had chalked up seven wides by the interval and led by just two points.
For their part, Kilkenny opened their account through three scores from talisman Richie Hogan before Michael Murphy added a fourth score for the Cats. However, points from Seamus Hennessy, Joey McLoughney and Patrick Bourke (two) meant Kilkenny trailed by a score just after the quarter-hour-mark.
After Bourke and Thomas McGrath had increased Tipperary's lead to a goal, Murphy netted for Kilkenny to bring them level.
Two points from McLoughney and Bourke's fourth point of the afternoon made it 0-9 to 1-3 to Tipp but John Mulhall pointed for the Cats to leave just a couple of points between the teams at half time.
Mulhall and team-mate Colin Fennelly pointed early in the second half before McGrath, Gearóid Ryan and Niall Bergin responded for Tipperary. Then Mulhall scored Kilkenny's second goal to even things up (2-6 to 0-12) before Hogan grabbed two points in quick succession.
That point from Hogan sent his side into a slim lead after Burke had earlier pointed for Tipp.
When substitute Shane Brennan calmly steered Kilkenny into a four-point lead with a goal Tipperary looked dead and buried.
However, Ryan, Bourke and Seamus Callinan replied to cut the deficit to a point.
A well-taken score from Hogan sent Kilkenny in front by two before McGrath and Tony Dunne evened things up again.
The match-winning point arrived in injury time from Callinan and it was enough for Tipperary to avenge their 2004 semi-final defeat and set up a mouth-watering final with Galway.
