Drom and Inch won their first ever mid U16 A football title by defeating JK Brackens by seven points on Monday 14th May in Littleton. With weather conditions very difficult for the time of year, Drom & Inch played against the elements in the first half. JK Brackens were determined to use the wind to their advantage in the first half and were pushing forward at every opportunity, however their shooting was letting them down in front of goal due to the great pressure of the Drom-Inch defence. Brackens were on the scoresheet in the 9th minute with a pointed free from Jordan Moloney.JK Brackens then got a golden opportunity to further extend their lead when they were awarded a penalty on the 12th minute but failed to capitilise when the ball went over the bar from the spotkick by Eric Quinlan. Drom Inch were under serious pressure at this junction and a third point from Radic Natkaneic saw Drom three down with 15 minutes gone. However Drom Inch boys dug deep and started to create a few chances which drifted wide, but then in the 20th minute the impressive Jamie Bergin got onto a great pass from Stevie Nolan to cut in along the endline and kick a fantastic goal to level matters. This three pointer rasied the men from the Ragg’s dander and Brendan Larkin further pointed in the 23rd minute follwed by another fantastic point from Jamie Bergin which put Drom-Inch two points up. Brackens kept trying to get ahead but brilliant defending by Emmet Maloney, Kevin Hassett and Padraig Campion saw Drom-Inch go in at the half time break leading 1.02 to 0.03.
Drom – Inch playing with the advantage of a strong gale, needed a good start to the second half and got just that with a Brendan Larkin point. Thomas Nolan then got a great individual goal after winning the kickout, played a give and go pass with a teammate before cooly slotting it past Thomas Morrissey in the Brackens goal. This was a cruel killer blow to Brackens and two more points form Micky Connors and Jamie Bergin saw Drom Inch race into an eight point lead after 45min. JK Brackens did not lie down however and led by the excellent Jordan Moloney kept pressing forward when they could, and points from Stephen Quinlan and Moloney reduced the deficit to six and when Michael Greed popped up on the 50th minute to grab a goal it looked like the match would go right down to the wire.JK Brackens were now looking much like the team that had easily won their semi final and were playing some very slick football. But as this Drom-Inch team has shown all throughout the year that they have character in abundance two well worked points from the impressive Thomas Nolan calmed the Brackens storm. A further Brendan Larkin point in the 28th minute put six points between the sides again and it was the Drom-Inch side who were to have the final say, through Padraig Campion (now playing at corner forward) rounded off a great evening’s football with a point in the dying moments to ensure Drom came out on top on a scoreline of 2.09 to 1.05.
This was Drom-Inch’s first ever Mid under 16 A football title and was a brilliant team performance from each player. Best for Drom-Inch on the day were Jamie Bergin, Emmet Moloney, Thomas Nolan, Padraic Campion and Thomas O’Meara. Brackens will be disappointed not to get the victory and things may have been different had they converted the first half penalty and also the chance which was blasted off the crossbar in the dying minutes. Jordan Maloney led the attack bravely on every occasion while Radic Natkaneic, Mikey O’Meara,Mikey Greed and Eoin Brophy all had their moments.
JK Brackens: Thomas Morrissey, Martin Scully, Eamonn Kennedy, Brian Roche, Joe Kennedy, Eoin Brophy, Stephen Quinlan (0-1), Lee Fennell, Eric Quinlan (0-1 pen), Radic Natkaneic (0-1), Jordan Moloney (0-2, 0-1f), Dylan Loughnane, Jack Kennedy, Michael O Meara, Michael Greed (1-0).
